Fantastic Four #319 by Steve Englehart, Keith Pollard and Joe Sinnott

This comic was part of the generous handful of comics I read as a kid before going headlong into the habit in 1991, and almost certainly the first actual Fantastic Four comic I read. I got it at a Winn-Dixie in New Albany, IN, but whether it was the one on State Street or the one on Grant Line Road I’m less sure.

I still have the same copy, must’ve read it two dozen times, and it shows. It’s why I have such a soft spot for Molecule Man and Volcana. I mean, the FF is fine, whatever, but those two really grabbed me.

I keep this at my desk as a reminder of cool shit I’ve done. Now it reminds me of how lucky I was to even brush up against a great man’s life in art. It only occurs to me just now that one of the main things I wrote in it was about bullshit dopes who quotewhore in their movie reviews. There’s a pretty fair shot he might have gotten a kick out of that, and a writer couldn’t ask for more of an accomplishment than that.

Hi, I’m Mark. As you may know, I’m kinda broke these days. It’s not the WORST thing in the world; my wife and I have a place to live, food to eat, clothes on our backs, health insurance, and have found new homes for our cats. Outside of that stuff, however, there are still a few scrapes and skins-of-our-teeth things going on, like paying off small debts like overdue bills and getting myself new glasses and sunglasses. I’m visually impaired/near legally blind and in a tough spot as far as finding work goes, so new glasses are fairly vital to me. It’s in that spirit that i’d like to cut the sob stuff and sell you some of my wonderful comics!

What I’m selling are comics I bought off the rack as the came out. For YEARS, some fating back to 1998 or so. They’re all in great shape, most read once then filed away like a good little packrat does.

What I’m selling them for is about a buck a book, SHIPPING INCLUDED. That means if I’ve got, say, Kurt Busiek’s run on THE AVENGERS which totals 62 books, that’s $60 flat, shipped to you via Priority Mail. Smaller bunches, like 12 issues or so, will most likely be shipped plain ol’ mail. Like I say, I’m not trying to make a mint here, I just want to free up some room and get my new glasses.

This is KitTen. She belongs to my good friends Bre and Meg, and is one of the SWEETEST cats you will ever meet. Recently, she was taken to the vet due to what sounded like congestion, and the vet found a tumor on the roof of her mouth. They gave her two options: either take her to a prohibitively expensive specialist, or put her on medication long enough for them to say goodbye.

I’m not sure how much the specialist may cost, but I’m positive it’s an amount that at this point seems impossible… but it shouldn’t have to be.
EDIT: It looks like the surgery for oral cancer in cats is anywhere between $900-$1200. If 45 people donated $20, she could at least make the minimum amount. My friend Ty and I are also trying to get into contact with Paws in the City about their medical assistance fund.

Please, if you have the money, PLEASE donate to Bre and Meg to get KitTen into a specialist for treatment. And if you don’t, please reblog and spread the word in case there are people out there who do. If this were my own cat I would be truly devastated if there were nothing I could do.

My wife and I have had a lot of trouble this year, including sending off a sick kitty and patching up a kitty with a busted pelvic bone. Many people, friends and strangers, came through for us both financially and emotionally. PSA: If you’re thinking about adopting a cat this Christmas, a lot of shelters have “Black Friday” sales where it’s substantially cheaper to adopt black cats. Black cats in shelters have the least chance for adoption, and a lot of them end up dying in shelters or being put down. They also have a high rate for being mutilated and/or killed by abusers. Keep this in mind if you’re looking to adopt this year.

I have a black cat currently healing from a broken pelvis. I don’t know if she fell out of a tree, got kicked by someone, hit by a car, or what. No idea. But I’m certain if my wife and I hadn’t found her as a tiny kitten in the crawl space under our apartment building four years ago a LOT worse would have happened to her. (We’re in a house in a better neighborhood now.) If you spend money on ANYTHING this Friday, check with your local shelters and adoption orgs for info.

I just saved a copy of DAMAGE CONTROL V3 #3 (cover-dated August 1991) from a Half Price Books cheapie bin and saw this ad near the back. It comes very close to pinpointing the moment I descended into Comics Madness, having recently read SILVER SURFER #50 and THE INFINITY GAUNTLET #1. IG and SURFER I jumped into immediately, but AVENGERS took another 9 issues before I got started there.

That Starlin stuff got its hooks into me DEEP, and the bejacketed Avengers are still “my” Avengers.

I didn’t get into CAPTAIN AMERICA until GALACTIC STORM, and you’d best believe I stuck around for MAN AND WOLF.

The less said about WOLVERINE, the better.
